Taylor Swift has broken her own Spotify record with a huge number of pre-saves for her new album ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’.

The pop star is gearing up to release her 12th studio record this Friday (October 3), following on from last year’s ‘The Tortured Poets Department’.

According to Rolling Stone, the imminent project has already surpassed five million pre-saves on Spotify – surpassing the record Swift previously held with her 2024 full-length effort. It is the first album to reach this figure in Spotify history.

The streaming giant launched a new feature yesterday (Monday September 29), which reveals the pre-save counts for the top 10 Countdown Pages. Every Wednesday, Spotify will share the ranking of the Countdown chart for fans.

Spotify exec Madeleine Bennett explained: “The Upcoming Releases hub is about celebrating what’s next in music, and Countdown Charts bring a whole new level of visibility to releases that fans are most excited about.

“By ranking the top pre-saved releases globally, we’re giving artists a powerful new way to build anticipation and connect with their biggest fans in the lead-up to release day.”

Artists with at least 5,000 active listeners in the last month will be able to launch Countdown Pages for forthcoming albums and EPs.

Swift’s ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ became the most pre-saved album in Spotify history on April 18, 2024.

Meanwhile, the cinematic release party for ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’ recently grossed $15million (£11million) in pre-sales in just 24 hours. The film is expected to gross somewhere between $30million and $50million (£22.2million to £37million) across its three-day run (Friday October 3 to Sunday October 5).

Swift will make a return to The Graham Norton Show on her album release day later this week. Elsewhere, approximately 500 Target branches in the US are due to open at midnight that day to sell ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’.

‘The Life Of A Showgirl’ was co-produced by Max Martin and Shellback, alongside Swift herself. The singer-songwriter has revealed the full tracklist for the album, which includes a team-up with Sabrina Carpenter on the title track.

Swift has described ‘…Showgirl’ as “the record I’ve been wanting to make for a very long time”. The LP will focus on “what was going on behind the scenes in my inner life” during the record-breaking ‘Eras Tour’.

She remembered that time as being “so exuberant and electric and vibrant”, saying: “It just comes from like the most infectiously joyful, wild, dramatic place I was in in my life.” Swift recorded the album in Sweden, in between concerts on the massive tour.

The star has insisted that there are “no other songs coming” beyond the standard edition tracklist. More recently, she talked about the “luxurious” album artwork and said fans would see “more images than we ever planned”.

“We chose this really high-gloss finish which I’ve never done before, and I think it looks so cool,” Swift added. “We wanted this album to feel really luxurious and kind of as a nod to the luxury that a showgirl puts on when she’s on stage.”
