Blackouts and brownouts are a fact of modern life. Getting by with candles and patience has its charms, but extended blackouts that last hours or even days are real problems, especially in warm weather. Sitting in the dark and sweating while all the expensive food in your fridge goes bad is no fun.

I solved for this by picking up this DuroMax generator—and right now it’s almost 40% off. This isn’t the first generator I’ve ever owned, but it’s easily the best, for three main reasons:

  • Power. With 10,500 watts of running power that can surge to 13,000 watts, this generator easily runs the essential stuff in the house, including appliances and air conditioning. It’s also transfer-switch ready so it can power the whole house seamlessly.

  • Electric start. If you’re like me, pulling a traditional recoil start cord—especially when you’re in a rush after the lights have just clicked off—is always a frustrating experience. But the XP13000EH has an electric, push-button start feature that makes firing it up a breeze (don’t worry, there’s a recoil backup option as well).

  • Dual-fuel. The first time you forget to fill up the gas can before a big storm might be the last time you forget—or not. The dual-fuel feature here means you can have a 20-pound (or larger) can of propane on hand to run the generator if you don’t have gasoline—and you can switch back and forth between the two as needed. Propane also means I don’t have to worry about cleaning out the gas tank and disposing of leftover gasoline.

It’s not the easiest generator to haul around—the wheels are no-flat and it rolls pretty easily, but heaving this thing into a truck or car isn’t easy. In other words, it’s movable, not ideal for portable needs. But as a whole-house backup generator it combines power with ease of use.
