US President Donald Trump’s 50-percent tariffs on swaths of Indian products took effect Wednesday, straining ties between Washington and New Delhi as the US justified its steep duties as punishment for India buying Russian oil. Former president Joe Biden had encouraged India to step up its purchase of Russian oil following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine to stabilise global prices.
