A US grand jury Wednesday set its site on one of Haiti’s most powerful gang leaders, Jimmy “Barbeque” Cherizier, announcing a $5 million reward for his arrest after indicting Cherizier for heading a “wide-ranging conspiracy.” The US’ involvement comes as gangs continue to grip the island, including an estimated 90 percent of the capital of Port-au-Prince, plunging Haiti into a cycle of devastating violence exacerbated by deep political instability.
