US tensions overshadow Canadian elections

Canadians headed to the voting booths on Monday to choose who will be the next leader of the US’s largest trading partner, as the Trump administration’s unpredictable waves of tariffs and overt musings of annexing its resource-rich neighbour overshadow an unexpectedly tight race between its two front-runners. The ruling Liberal Party’s Mark Carney, a former banker who took over the party leadership in March after former Canadian leader Justin Trudeau announced his resignation, narrowly led Pierre Poilievre, the head of the Conservative Party, prior to the start of voting.
