So much for being a gay icon… Debra Messing has gone totally pro-Donald Trump!
Leading up to Tuesday’s election in New York City, the Will & Grace alum was all over social media encouraging her fans to vote for Andrew Cuomo as the city’s next mayor. Last week, she voted early, telling Instagram followers she chose Cuomo because “we need someone with experience.” She claimed the Big Apple was “too massive, complex, and consequential to have someone 33 years old who has never had a job, and missed 80% of his votes as Councilman.” That’s a dig at Cuomo’s 34-year-old Democratic opponent Zohran Mamdani — who the actress is strongly against!

In the 48 hours leading up to election day, the TV star was incredibly active online, reposting a TON of deeply controversial content, including a lot of Islamophobic rhetoric and misinformation about Mamdani. For instance, the 57-year-old, who is Jewish and an advocate for Israel, shared graphic videos warning Jewish folks not to vote for Mamdani because of his pro-Palestine beliefs. She also reposted the President’s anti-Mamdani Truth Social posts. In one, he declared:
“Any Jewish person that votes for Zohran Mamdani, a proven and self professed JEW HATER, is a stupid person!!!”
One pic Debra shared to her thousands of followers showed someone filling out a ballot with two options. One, “A Democrat, just a Democrat.” The other? “An Actual Communist Jihadist … A literal Karl Marx-quoting, America-hating jihadist.” Senator Ted Cruz posted the same image on X (Twitter) on Monday.

The Along Came Polly star’s repostings came from a string of other conservative channels such as CPAC, Breitbart, and Newsmax. During the primaries in June, Debra shared similar ideology via her offensive posts, one accusing Mamdani of celebrating 9/11 and claiming he’s a “mayor who sides with terrorists.”
Fans have been left downright appalled by her online behavior and political stance, particularly because of what she once represented to so many! Thanks to her time playing Grace Adler on the popular, progressive sitcom Will & Grace, the leading lady was beloved by so many gays in the early 2000s who looked to her as an outspoken ally. Now? Not so much… Taking to X (Twitter), users wrote:
“Debra Messing is a vile bigot. I won’t even reshare what she’s posting for fear of spreading messages that could lead to violence. Shame on anyone who promotes or books her, along with the platforms that won’t ban her. She should never be seen on our screens or stages again.”
“Debra Messing has gone from this LGBT+ ally and 90s nostalgia actress to a bats**t crazy zionist in such a short time it’s insane. Acting jobs dried up completely or?”
“What happened to her????”

While everyone’s obviously entitled to their own opinions, building your career off the support of the LGBTQ+ community only to then promote problematic policies and beliefs that ultimately hurt them is certainly a choice… But despite all her campaigning, Andrew Cuomo ultimately lost the race to Zohran Mamdani. Debra’s yet to react to the results or controversy.
