Italy on Wednesday gave the final approval for a €13.5 billion ($15.6 billion) project to construct the world’s longest suspension bridge, linking Sicily to the mainland. After decades of planning and much debate, a ministerial committee granted the green light for the state-funded bridge spanning the Strait of Messina, announced Transport and Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini.
