Letterboxd has announced a new feature called Video Store, which allows users to rent films

The social media platform allows users to rate, review, and compile lists of films that they have seen or want to see. To help with the latter, the company is now introducing a new feature modelled on video rental stores of the past.

Virtual “shelves” will feature curated titles such as film festival hits, Long-watchlisted titles, restorations, limited ‘drops’, and staff recommendations. The feature is said to roll out in early December.

The official Letterboxd announcement assured fans: “This isn’t a subscription service! No lock-in, no paywall. Just rent the films you want, whenever you want, and join the conversation with our community logging, reviewing and adding them to lists.”

Users will be able to watch online through the website, iOS, Android, Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast and Airplay.

The website has gained a number of famous users recently, such as Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese. “I love the idea of putting different films together into one programme. I grew up seeing double features, programs in repertory houses, evenings of avant-garde films in storefront theatres,” Scorsese wrote in his Companion Films list introduction on his profile’s website.

“You always learn something, see something in a new light, because every movie is in conversation with every other movie. The greater the difference between the pictures, the better.”

In April, Ed Sheeran also revealed he has an anonymous account. “No one knows I have a Letterboxd… I have no followers on it, literally I just log the films that I watch,” he said during an interview on podcast Call Me Daddy. “No one reads it, it’s just for me to log it.”

He continued: “It’s public… I guess they’ll find out now. I think it’s more fun for people to find it.”
