Thousands of acres (roughly 189km2) of stolen land have been returned to California’s Yurok tribe, more than 120 years after it was stolen during the region’s Gold Rush, according to a conservation deal announced Thursday. Indigenous people’s knowledge is increasingly seen as vital in tackling climate change. The tribe plan to reintroduce fire as a forest management tool, remove invasive species and plant trees while helping to restore salmon and wildlife.
