A hand-written letter penned by Napoleon in which he falsely denies involvement in the kidnapping of Pope Pius VII in 1809 is to go under the hammer this weekend, recalling the somewhat thorny historical ties between France and the Vatican. “It was without my orders and against my will that the Pope was taken out of Rome,” the French emperor wrote.
